Trotternish - The area in which Taigh na Traon is found

Trotternish boasts a multitude of attractions, both natural and man-made, contemporary and historic.

For the more serious walker there are twenty miles of the Trotternish ridge to explore, while others may head for the equally wild and beautiful and much more accessible Quiraing, with its bizarre rock formations and pinnacles. The Fairy Glen offers a much more gentle version of the Quiraing in miniature, to be found in the crofting area of Glen Conon. Another well-known attraction is the Old Man of Storr, with its wonderful views over Raasay and Rona, and across to the distant hills of Applecross.

All these walks can be found on maps and guidebooks, but we have listed some of our own favourite short walks that can be done in the vicinity of Taigh na Traon, some straight from the house without taking your car. There is a lovely sandy beach at Staffin and numerous other beaches and coves to explore around the Trotternish coastline. Details of these walks are kept in a booklet in the lounge of Taigh na Traon.

Uig Pottery is worth a visit, and next door is the Uig Brewery where you can pick up some of the famous Red Cuillin, Black Cuillin and Hebridean Gold. The Caledonian and MacBrayne ferries sail from Uig to the Western Isles and you can take a day trip to Tarbert or Lochmaddy. The local Tourist Information Centre at Uig provides much useful information to help you enjoy your holiday to the full.

Portree is the capital of the island and its attractions include the art gallery, An Tuireann, and the Aros Experience, a visitor centre featuring exhibitions and audio-visual shows.
