Autumn Breaks at Taigh na Traon
Your holiday home on the Isle of Skye

Taigh na Traon offers you a lovely holiday home on the Isle of Skye and is the ideal place for an autumn break . Its unspoilt natural scenery is beautiful in all seasons, yet autumn on the Isle of Skye is a very special time. The autumn colours and light combine to give sensational landscapes as the hills seem to catch fire with glowing colours, then as the sun sets, the shadows lengthen and become a subtle blend of mauves and purple. The rich greens and blues of summer evolve into a tapestry of russet reds, amber and brackeny golds, while the moorgrass changes to an indescribable but extraordinarily beautiful orange-green that has to be seen to be believed. And of course the wild heather is at its best in September and October.
Often the weather can be settled and still and balmy gentle autumn days are the ideal time for searching for wild mushrooms. A lazy amble through Dunvegan woods, rustling through crinkly golden leaves, may well result in a treasure trove of creamy-white frilled oyster mushrooms. The island of Raasay is another haunt of the wild mushroom hunter as here are to be found the much prized cep, or penny bun, the delicate apricot scented chanterelle and the tiny purple amethyst deceiver. September and October are the peak months for wild mushrooms and these can be enjoyed in Skye's excellent restaurants and hotels which specialise in local produce.
Isle of Skye lamb is at its finest in the autumn and there is a wide selection of sea food including salmon both fresh and traditionally smoked, and also "hot-smoked" salmon - a new delicacy, along with mussels, prawns, squat lobster and locally-dived scallops. Game also features heavily on autumn menus and the gourmet can also savour a wide range of Scottish cheeses.
Autumn on Skye gives you a chance to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A time to enjoy the clear air on brisk, bracing walks along rugged cliffs and headlands, to see the long wavering flights of wild geese and listen to the liquid calls of migrating plovers. After a day out walking or visiting one of the many tourist attractions, you can settle in for the evening in the cosy lounge of Taigh na Traon, your comfortable holiday home on the Isle of Skye, with the fire lit, one of your favourite CDs playing softly and perhaps taste the peat smokiness of a fine Talisker whisky, a souvenir perhaps of a trip round the Talisker distillery in Carbost.
Outside if the night is clear you will be amazed at the number and brilliancy of the stars in the night sky and the clear band of the Milky Way cleaving the sky. Because Taigh na Traon is so far away from streetlights and city glow, the sight of the stars on a truly dark night is unforgettable.
If all this is not enough to convince you to spend a week or two in our lovely holiday home, Taigh na Traon on the magical Isle of Skye, then perhaps our reduced autumn rates, special midweek breaks and discounts for two will do the trick. Telephone or email with your preferred dates and we will be happy to assist you.
