Where to eat out

There are many good places in Portree and also some good places nearer home.

The Duntulm Castle Hotel
The Duntulm Castle Hotel is the nearest for bar meal or restaurant meals and has lovely views of the ruined castle and Tulm Island in the bay; however it is closed out of season.

The Flodigarry Hotel
The Flodigarry Hotel is open all year and you can eat in the Conservatory or in the Water Horse Restaurant.

The Cuillin Hills Hotel
The Cuillin Hills Hotel does bar and restaurant meals. We can recommend the Sunday buffet lunch, which is £9.95 per head, half-price for children under 15 and £2.50 for children under 12. It is more expensive on special days like Mother’s Day or Easter Sunday. They have hot roasts and cold food with lots of seafood and lovely desserts, but you would be best to book, even on the day.

The Café Arriba
The Café Arriba is our latest arrival in Portree and is upstairs above a shop called “Over the Rainbow” at the top of the road leading down to the pier, opposite the Portree Hotel. You can get filled rolls, light lunches including vegetarian specials and there is lots of home baking. There is a selection of wines by the glass and a good range of coffees. Open 7am to 10pm. Recommended.

Glenview Restaurant
Glenview Restaurant in Cul-na-cnoc, Staffin. This is a new local restaurant.
The view from both the lounge and dining room over looks the Trotternish hills and glens. This small restaurant has a daily changing menu offering two course and three course options. All emphasis is on local and quality produce without over fussing the plate.

The Granary
The Granary next to the bakery in Portree also does food and there is a more traditional café in Wentworth Street called the Caledonian Café.

VanillaSkye
For home made ice cream try VanillaSkye in Wentworth Street, Portree. VanillaSkye also sell scrumptious hand-made chocolates as well as organic meat including local wild boar sausages, venison, local mushrooms and fungi when in season.
