Further Useful Information

Taigh na Traon is situated in the crofting township of Linicro, four miles north of Uig in the district of Kilmuir; an area steeped in Gaelic history and tradition and where Gaelic is still spoken daily by many. This is a wonderful setting for a Isle of Skye holiday; wildlife abounds here, including golden eagles, otters, and also the rare corncrake from which the house takes its name. The distinctive rasping call of the corncrake is often heard from the house on summer evenings.

There are opportunities here for excellent hill walking, loch, river and sea fishing, exploring, birdwatching, pony-trekking and kayaking. You may wish to take a day trip across the Minch to the Western Isles, or simply just slow down, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery during your Isle of Skye holiday.

From Taigh na Traon, a leisurely 15 minute walk takes you over a burn, through open country with Highland cattle pastured on either side and past Skye's historic Monkstadt House which is now being rebuilt; it was the residence of MacDonald of the Isles from 1730 to 1830. Continuing down to the sea you can explore the deserted shingle beach with its rock pools and coves - a well-known haunt of otters. Going in the other direction from Taigh na Traon, a hill-path off the quiet main road takes you swiftly up into the remote high moorland grazing where you may see golden eagles, buzzards and many wild flowers.

Click on the corncrake to hear its call

Linicro is one of the few remaining breeding areas for the rare corncrake, whose distinctive rasping call can usually be heard from the holiday house in the summer.

The corncrake is a protected species and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds encourages crofters in this district to delay cutting their grass for hay until after the corncrake's breeding period has finished.

Corncrakes are very shy and although you are likely to hear them calling, they are rarely seen. We have named of our Isle of Skye holiday house "Taigh na Traon" which is Gaelic for "House of the Corncrake", because it is such an ideal spot from which to hear the distinctive call of the rare corncrake. You will find Taigh na Traon a warm, comfortable well-equipped self catering house from which to enjoy a magical Isle of Skye holiday.
