Shops and Services on the Isle of Skye

Supermarkets
The Co-op in Portree is the biggest supermarket and is open from 8 am to 8 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 8 am to 9 pm on Thursday and Friday and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Not as big as many supermarkets but fairly well stocked. It has a chilled fruit and veg section, a delicatessen and hot food counter, bakery, large frozen food section with plenty of stuff for any teenage vegetarians - Linda McCartney, Quorn etc. Lots of wine and whisky and their special offers on single malts can be very good. You will pass it when you take the Uig road out of Portree, it is past Ewen MacRaes West End Garage and petrol station, turn right at the roundabout as you head out of Portree.

There is a Morrisons supermarket in the main village of Portree, which is open 9 am to 6 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9 am to 7 pm on Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday. This is not as big as the Co-op and there is no carpark.

There is also a large Co-op on the main road through Broadford which is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 10pm.

Local shops
There is a shop at Uig on the main road, which sells groceries, fruit and vegetables, milk and lovely fresh bread, rolls and cakes and has an off-licence to sell wines, beers, and spirits. It is open 9am - 5.30pm and closed on Sundays. Daily papers arrive mid-morning, and the Post Office occupies part of the shop. There is also a cash machine.

The Uig Filling Station sells groceries, newspapers, magazines and some car accessories and has an off-licence to sell wines, beers, and spirits. It is open Mon-Sat 8.00am to 8.00pm and 10.30am to 4.00pm on Sundays.

Chemist and Pharmacy
There is a dispensing pharmacy in Wentworth Street , Portree. It also sells film, gifts and toiletries, baby things and you can get watch batteries changed here.

There are two other pharmacies in the area, one in Broadford and one in Kyle.

The Dunvegan, Carbost, and Sleat doctors surgeries are dispensing pratices so any medication they prescribe will be dispensed there. 

For “over the counter” medication such as paracetamol, hayfever remedies, laxatives, cough medicines and so on, you can get some things in the Co-op or at the local dispensing surgeries as well as the three pharmacies.

Post Office
There are main Post Offices in Wentworth Street, Portree, and in Broadford.

Uig Post Office is open the same hours as the shop, 9.00am - 5.30pm but closed 1.00 - 2.30pm.

Petrol Stations
There are two in Portree, one in Broadford, one in Uig and a very small one in Staffin. The Uig Filling Station, shop and off-licence is open Mon-Sat 8.00am to 8.00pm and 10.30am to 4.00pm on Sundays and has Sunday papers. MacRaes Garage in Portree sells petrol and their shop is open from 8.00m to 10.00pm but is closed on Sunday. The Viewfield Filling Station and shop on the Viewfield Road in Portree is open 7.30am – 10.00pm Monday to Saturday, and 9.30am - 6.30pm on Sunday and also sells Sunday papers. Sutherland’s garage and Skye Surprises gift shop in Broadford are open for petrol 24 hours a day all year round.

Car repairs and spare parts
Ewen MacRae’s garage on the Dunvegan road, also Portree Coachworks on the Industrial estate further up the Dunvegan Road.

Taxi
Our local taxi is Uig Taxi, tel.542 342 or 542 441, or there is A2B taxis, Portree (01478) 613456, and Ace taxis, Portree (01478) 613600.

Doctor
Portree Medical Centre (Tel (01478) 612013 ) is in Portree on Fancy Hill, up past the Royal Bank of Scotland. Portree Hospital has a Casualty department with medical cover provided by the Portree GPs.

Vet
There are several vets available-see the Yellow Pages. We can recommend the Broadford vet who, although based in Broadford, also consults in Portree several times a week. His surgery can be contacted on 01471 833922.

Banks
The Royal Bank of Scotland , Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank are all in Portree, and all have cash dispensers. There is also a cash dispenser outside the Portree Co-op.

Tourist Information
The Portree TIC is open all year and is open some nights until 8pm in the summer months.

Carry out food
The Spicehut Indian Restaurant does takeaway food and is down on Bayfield, in Portree (look for the signposts). There is also a Chinese takeaway opposite the library in Portree called Stevie’s Kitchen.
