For the more serious walker there are twenty miles of the Trotternish ridge to explore, while others may head for the equally wild and beautiful and much more accessible Quiraing, with its bizarre rock formations and pinnacles. The Fairy Glen offers a much more gentle version of the Quiraing in miniature, to be found in the crofting area of Glen Conon. Another well-known attraction is the Old Man of Storr, with its wonderful views over Raasay and Rona, and across to the distant hills of Applecross. | |||||||||||||||||||
| All these walks can be found on maps and guidebooks, but we have listed some of our own favourite short walks that can be done in the vicinity of Taigh na Traon, some straight from the house without taking your car. There is a lovely sandy beach at Staffin and numerous other beaches and coves to explore around the Trotternish coastline. Details of these walks are kept in a booklet in the lounge of Taigh na Traon. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| At the "top end" of the Trotternish peninsula the dramatic scenery gives way to history in the shape of the ruins of Duntulm Castle, the Flora MacDonald Memorial and the Skye Museum of Island Life, an evocative and fascinating restoration of a blackhouse village. | ||||||||||||||||||||
